Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) is considered as the most primary choice of treatment for mild to moderate OSA patients because of its high success rate and high patient compliance. Dental appliance are more comfortable to wear and less invasive than a CPAP machine. Oral appliances work by repositioning the mandible to help advance the tongue to create a more accessible airway opening. By preventing the tongue from blocking the airway passage, many appliances prove to alleviate and reduce snoring and treat mild to moderate OSA. Appliances comes in various types with slightly different mechanisms to treat sleep apnea and dentist would determine which appliance best fits the patient. Commonly used appliances are as follows:
The small size and precise fit is more comfortable than other traditional sleep apnea appliances. Without hoses, masks or surgery, patients love the restful sleep they get with this device. Less bulky and easy to use.
TAP appliances are FDA cleared and fit comfortably in the mouth because of the compact hardware allowing room for the lips to close. TAP III is now made of a nickel-free hardware that is stronger than stainless steel. It can accommodate patients that have class I, II and III bites. With a single point of central adjustment, the TAP prevents uneven bilateral adjustment that may create an irregular bite and jaw discomfort
SomnoDent appliance is our most comfortable appliance ever. The upper and lower splints are computer designed and manufactured by robots to the shape of the teeth using a single piece of dental acrylic to make the splints stronger and last longer. A soft Bflex liner is added to cradle and support the teeth. It cushions the device against the teeth. The innovative design of the SomnoDent gently closes the mouth allowing to breathe through the nose while sleeping. This eliminates snoring in most people as well as preventing dry mouth, which is a common complaint with other oral appliances.
The Silencer features a precision milled titanium attachment called the Halstrom Hinge. This design ensures excellence in comfort, adjustment, and durability. The body of the appliance is fabricated in a dual injection process providing a hard bite surface and a permanently elastic soft inner liner.
Norad appliance is FDA cleared oral appliance for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. It is a self molding appliance called “boil & bite” appliance and not lab fabricated. It is a temporary appliance to use when patients need to undergo dental work or if they’ve lost or damaged their existing appliance. Can last for months to even years depending on fabrication.
Silent Nite is a custom-fabricated device that moves the lower jaw into a forward position, increasing space in the airway passage and reducing air velocity and soft tissue vibration. Special connectors are attached to transparent flexible upper and lower forms. The fit is excellent and comfortable, permitting small movements of the jaw (TMJ) and allowing uninhibited oral breathing.
This appliance is fitted on the lower teeth in 98% of the cases and the tail is used as a depressor. The tail of the appliance extends posteriorly to allow the air passage to open throughout the night, enabling sufficient oxygen to reach the pulmonary system. This appliance lowers the number of times the airway is blocked hourly.
The OSAP is a full coverage mandibular advancement mouthpiece made of a soft and flexible material to ensure maximum comfort for the patient. The OSAP is custom made with or without an oral air passage for optimal effectiveness.
This appliance is fabricated of thermoactive acrylic, becomes pliable for easy insertion and confirms securely to the dentition for an excellent fit while significantly decreasing soft tissue and tooth discomfort. Small increments of forward lower jaw advancement are initiated by the patient under the direction of a dentist and this helps avoid rapid jaw movements that can cause significant patient discomfort. Once warmed under hot water and inserted, the acrylic resin hardens as it cools to body temperature and firmly affixes itself to both arches. Lateral and vertical jaw movement is permitted which enables the patent to yawn, swallow, and drink
water without dislodging the appliance.
The EMA appliance is designed to promote a deeper, more restful sleep by preventing snoring and relieving the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Appliance uses nine different lengths of elastic straps to gradually and incrementally advance the mandible. EMA patented design allows freedom of lateral mandibular movement. Patients can easily change the elastic straps.
The OASYS Oral/Nasal Airway System is the first dental device for Snoring, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome that treats the two major causes of sleep disordered breathing by addressing upper airway resistance in the nasal region and blockage in the throat region. The OASYS is FDA approved as a medical device in two separate classifications as a mandibular repositioner for treatment of snoring and sleep apnea and as a nasal dilator for improved ease of breathing. The OASYS treats both vulnerable areas of the upper airway with one patented system while strengthening the throat area by pulling the
lower jaw and tongue forward to prevent the tongue from blocking the airflow and strengthening the throat against collapse.
This appliance works on muscle tonicity by stretching the tongue muscle. 80% of patient showed positive results in moderate to severe apnea. It stabilizes the mandible in protrusion and prevents tongue retraction.
The APM Ultra Positioner is a fully mandibular repositioning device that provides the maximum in occlusal-vertical support. The APM is excellent for strong-muscled, heavy clenching patients. A protrusive bite is required for the APM. The APM Ultra appliance is made of a heat-sensitive acrylic for wearing comfort.
